17.10.2012 - European Environment Agency (EEA) has included Kosovo for the first time in European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet) annual (2011-2012) report priority data flows. The evaluation of priority data flows is done on 13 priority subject of which five are not relevant to Kosovo. The data reported to the EEA by the Kosovo Environment Protection Agency (KEPA) are assessed with maximal points on the subjects; Natural Protected Areas and Quality of River Water, while on Groundwater Quality, Air Emissions and Ozone data it received good points.
According to the list, Kosovo is ranked better than Malta (EU member), Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Its the 15th report by the EEA on the issue aimed a evaluating the progress on data flows and of identifying the problems that the Eionet countries have with priority data flows. It also aims to help them for better performance in the future. Securing of the high quality of priority data flows on environment in Eionet network is one of the main goals of the EEA which can be achieved by their collection in due time, relevance and trusted ones.
Kosovos participation, KEPAs respectively, in EEA activities has been made possible throughout EUs IPA project called Participation of Western Balkans countries in EEA work. Kosovo is part of the project since 2010. The project is part of the preparatory measures by the EU in support of aspirant and candidate countries in European integration process carried out through participation of environment protection agencies of Eionet network in activities organized by EEA. The project is also about data exchanges between agencies from Western Balkans region and EEA and make possible a better contribution of regional agencies to environment protection in Europe. Training and technical support is offered by the EEA and Eionet network to regional agencies throughout the project.
