Bjeshket e Nemuna, second National Park in Kosovo

24/12/2012 - With the adoption of the Law on the National Park “Bjeshkët e Nemuna", Kosovo has one more protected area with the status of National Park. This is the National Park “Bjeshkët e Nemuna” which includes an area of 62.488 ha and is located in the territory of Gjakova, Junik, Peja, Deçan and Istog municipalities.

The territory decrated National Park, is known with rare nature values, large number of important forest ecosystem, important habitats of rare species, and reach characteristic of hydrology, geomorphology and landscape which have an science, educative – educational and tourism-recreational importance.

This law sets out strict regimes according to the first zone (part of the territory with notably characteristics of nature, and it has the character of strict protection area); second zone (part of the territory which is characterized with ecosystems and other nature values, wherein may be carried out activities that are not inconsistent with the purposes of protection); third zone (part wherein is allowed sustainable use, intended for the construction of facilities for rest, recreation and tourism and the needs of residents for the limited use of natural resources) and  impact zone (includes the area of 50 m form the border of the Park which serves for the prevention of harmful impacts).

This park will be administrated by he Directorate of NP “Bjeshkët e Nemuna” which will be established within 6 months from the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and will be part of Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency.

Professional rationale for taking protection "Bjeshkët e Nemuna” as a Park was developed in 2003 by the Institute for Nature Protection.
